New road to help ease traffic on A1

22 Jul 2020

The road that links Mabeleapodi, Tshimoyapula and Serule will help ease traffic along the Gaborone/Francistown road commonly known as A1.

Serule’s Kgosi Gothatama Mudzingwa said, in an interview, that instead of using A1 road, motorists coming from Molepolole and Serowe could use the alternative route to travel to Francistown and Selebi Phikwe.

She said traffic congestion along A1 worse during the holidays, resulting in an increase in road accidents. Kgosi Mudzingwa also said the alternative road would cut the travelling distance, thus enabling motorists to reach their destinations on time.

She said the road would also bring about business opportunities to Tshimoyapula and Serule, thus creating employment for people in that area.  She said the ongoing construction had already created employment for the people of that area, especially the youth.

She said those who had farms around the Serowe area would easily access them.

The project, which started last May, through the Economic Stimulus Programme, was expected to be complete this year.

The project has been awarded to UNIK construction and it comprises construction of the 62km stretch between Mabeleapudi and Serule, and six kilometre access roads to Tshimoyapula and Serule.

Meanwhile, Kgosi Kgomotso Boiditswe of Topisi said the road would improve the lives of Batswana in that area. He also urged farmers to take care of their livestock as stray animals contributed to road accidents, especially at night.

He said the people of Topisi would also benefit as they could also set up small businesses along the road. ends
