Points system to address road safety- Segokgo

16 Jul 2020

The Ministry of Transport and Communications, is working with the Attorney General to draft regulations for implementation of points system when issuing drivers licences.

Minister Thulagano Segokgo informed Ntlo ya Dikgosi on July 13 that the system, which was legislated in 2008, would assist in addressing the issue of road safety in the country.

He also pointed out that many countries had adopted the system, under which an individual’s driving licence is suspended based on the number of points accumulated over a period of time because of the traffic offences committed.

He said in order to have the regulations that would be able to serve the intended purpose, various stakeholders such as Dikgosi would be consulted once the draft is in place.

Minister Segokgo was responding to a motion by Kgosi Oscar Mosielele of Moshupa Region, who wanted the government to consider the points system in the issuance of drivers’ licences. The motion was adopted. ENDS
