Council assists over 8 000 households with food packages

07 Jul 2020

Letlhakeng Sub-district has assisted 8 787 households with COVID-19 food packages.

In addition, the sub-district also assisted over 1 000 households issued with food hampers from donations received by the office of the deputy district commissioner.

Officially opening Letlhakeng Sub-district council session on July 6, sub-council chairperson, Mr Meshack Tshenyego said the distribution exercise started in  April and was done in accordance with the categories of COVID-19 relief food baskets depending on the number of people per household.

He said the distribution of food to distressed households had challenges such as dishonest members who hid the fact that some amongst them were public officers and double dipping by some households.

Mr Tshenyego said there were also instances where some foreign nationals were also given food packages.

He said he made regular visits to check progress and intervene when there were issues to be addressed or clarified.

He told councillors that the exercise was done in haste and there might have been mistakes, but that the shortfalls were not deliberate but due to pressures of the work at the time.

The sub-council chairperson further said due to lockdown protocols, consultations were inadequate as most of the local leadership were left out of the exercise.

He commended those who were at the forefront of the food distribution exercise for a job well done despite the challenges they met.

Mr Tshenyego added that it was commendable that there were no fatalities due to starvation including “our sub-district.” Ends
