Future Explorers Youth Society (FEYS), in collaboration with Kynphausen Foundation from Germany, have donated food hampers, school uniform and winter clothing worth P75 000 to 100 school going children in Maun.
Established in 2007, FEYS promotes educational work amongst school going children, environmental conservation and also equips youngsters with life skills so that they become responsible citizens.
The association has partnered with the German Foundation which assists it with funding.
Speaking during the handover of the goods, North West District commissioner, Mr Keolopile Leipego hailed both FEYS and Kynphausen Foundation for demonstrating care and love towards youngsters.
The donations, he said, came at the right time when the country was battling the COVID-19 pandemic and appreciated the associations’ commitment in bringing change in the lives of the youngsters and out of school youth.
Recently, FEYS also donated food hampers, toiletry and clothes to 45 out of school youth in Maun to relief them from the impact of COVID-19.
Mr Leipego said FEYS had laid a strong foundation reflected in their good work of promoting environmental conservation, drilling pupils on educational work, life skills and leadership skills to ensure they became responsible citizens in future.
In addition, he noted that the association also taught youngsters how they could explore available opportunities in the tourism sector and how they could benefit from their rich natural resources.
Ngamiland, he said, was rich in natural resources, but poverty stricken and appreciated efforts by the organisation in teaching young people ways to fully utilise the environment in a sustainable manner.
He acknowledged that the association organised camps during school vacation where they taught children about specific environmental protection topics.
During the camps, the children are provided with the necessary technical, social and design skills in the area of environmental protection and sustainability that would enable them to participate in shaping the future.
Mr Leipego assured the association of support from the district leadership, noting that they were equally concerned about cleanliness and environmental conservation.
He said government was committed to transform Maun into a green city and also to ensure the community fully benefited from the tourism industry.
“It is important to join forces with organisations like FEYS which are passionate about the environment and also drive the government agenda. We highly recognise your efforts and we are committed to support you all the way,” he added.
Mr James Pitseyagae from FEYS explained that the organisation was working with 350 school going children in Maun and out of school youth.
While the country was going through trying times of the COVID-19 pandemic, he said they found it fit to extend a helping hand to youngsters and youth who were in distress as the pandemic had affected all and paralyzed the economy.
He appreciated that many young people were hustlers as they depended on activities such as fishing, boat excursions, art and crafts.
He noted that their businesses had been affected by the pandemic due to movement restrictions.
Mr Pitseyagae revealed that their association would keep on implementing its programmes, including charity activities and appealed to the community to join hands with them.
Kgosi Cosmos Lelatlhego appreciated the good work by the association, noting that since its establishment it was still going strong and implementing tangible projects, citing the cultural village at Moeti Junior Secondary School and furniture which was provided at his kgotla office.
The organisation, he said, also provided tutorials to pupils who were due to write their final examinations and also assisted in funerals by providing water and firewood. Ends
