Schools adjust to new health regulations

Schools in Letlhakeng Sub-district have adjusted to changes emanating from the COVID-19 pandemic.
In an interview, acting chief education officer in the sub-district, Mr Mokwadi Tese, said he was impressed with the level of preparedness in schools as well as response from parents.
Mr Tese said teachers were playing a critical role in ensuring that learners understood changes.
Teachers assisted learners to adopt to the new normal such as wearing face masks at all times.
On one hand, while social distancing appeared to be a challenge among learners, he said teachers also ensured that learners maintained social distancing both in classes and at play grounds.
On challenges, which included shortage of classrooms, he said a shift system had been introduced while some schools like Lempu Junior Secondary School in Salajwe would be provided with porta cabins to help address the challenge.
On additional classes, he said schools would be provided with extra teachers, adding, however, that learners who had returned after absconding had exacerbated the situation.
However, he indicated that some classes were still available as pre-learners would return to school next month.
To ensure that learners adhered to COVID-19 protocols, he advised schools to have contingency plans and provide them with warm water in the morning to wash their hands in case geysers were dysfunctional.
Nevertheless, Mr Tese expressed hope that schools would register good results in spite of the disturbed curriculum, saying teachers were doing their best to assist learners.
He thanked teachers for being at the forefront, adding that, ‘we are also providing them with psycho-social support to motivate them.’ Ends
