Maun Waste Warriors cleans Thamalakane River

A group of Maun residents, alias Maun Waste Warriors, have on Saturday continued with their quest to make the tourism village remain clean and attractive via its litter picking campaign along Thamalakane River.
One Margaret Mead says, “Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world. ”
That seems to have been the driving force behind the assemblage of volunteers to form an army of litter combatants in the name of Maun Waste Warriors in 2019 to fight the blight of litter in their locality.
In an interview, the group founder, Mr Oarabile Johannes said their organisation continued to engage the North West District Council to ensure that waste collected was recycled.
Mr Johannes indicated that they also strived to sensitise the public and learners in schools about the importance of a clean environment, saying litter did not only make the surroundings ugly, but was also a threat to wildlife as well as people’s health.
The organisation, he said, was also working with Okavango Research Institute to recycle plastic bottles to make face shields.
Further, Mr Johannes appealed to Maun residents and the business community to come on board and help make Maun clean and provide necessary items such as gabbage bins, among others.
Maun Waste Warriors chief sponsor, Mr Tebogo Boalotswe said their sponsorship, dubbed Project Sanitise Maun entailed financial assistance and technical advisory.
Mr Boalotswe indicated that the Maun development plan of 1997-2021 preempted the village as a city, therefore said Thamalakane River played a crucial role in the Maun outlook.
He noted that litter-picking was an important part of protecting the environment and promoting Maun.
Mr Boalotswe therefore encouraged Maun community to join hands with Maun Waste Warriors every Saturday for the good cause of assisting government in keeping the environment clean.
He said response to the initiative had been positive from government offices. Ends
