Moeng College dilapidated infrastructure and the up to P100 million budget proposal has compelled the Minister of Infrastructure and Housing Development Mr Mmusi Kgafela to visit the school.
Minister Kgafela indicated that interested contractors who showed up for a site visit for maintenance of the school infrastructure submitted proposals ranging between P80 million and P100 million.
He said the school’s sewerage and water network system was old and had never been fully maintained hence the need for in-depth maintenance.
Ministry of Basic Education deputy permanent secretary, Ms Mariam Moroba said the minister’s visit was timely as it coincided with her own ministry’s visit to the college.
She said funding requested for the school’s maintenance was high.
Ms Moroba noted that the minister had made a commitment, through appropriate structures, to start maintenance which he said should be prioritised.
She indicated that her ministry’s hope was that the project would be ongoing by 2021 when the multiple pathways teaching system commenced.
She expressed the hope that challenges affecting the school would be addressed.
Maintenance of Moeng College, one of the oldest schools in the country, would give the school a face lift, she said.
She said the school had 456 Form Four and 460 Form Five learners with 151 teachers.
Ministry of Infrastructure and Housing Development acting permanent secretary Mr Bareng Malatsi said in an interview that classrooms, hostels, teachers houses needed to refurbished and a new sewerage and water network systems put in place.
