There is need to move with speed towards shifting to long distance learning in an effort to minimise contact sessions.
This was said by Assistant Minister of Tertiary Education, Research, Science and Technology, Mr Ronald Shamukuni during a visit to Botswana Open University (BOU) Maun branch recently.
He revealed that it was recently agreed to re-focus attention and resources to open distance learning and emphasised the need to move fast to push the agenda.
Mr Shamukuni said a vibrant e-learning environment was critical going forward.
He emphasised the need to focus more energy and resources to develop the whole eco-system of e-learning and ensure all learners had access to gadgets.
Mr Shamukuni said the institution had made visible efforts to facilitate compliance with COVID-19 protocols noting that he had learnt of its commitment to cope with the new normal.
He also expressed happiness with the institution’s efforts in ensuring that services were brought closer to the people, allowing for extensive geographical penetration.
In an effort to enhance learning, the institution had introduced the virtual learning network linking headquarters in Gaborone and the five regional campuses. It also posts material on the website for easy access by learners.
The initiatives, he said, demonstrated the importance of distance learning.
Campus director, Ms Boipelo Kesamang informed the minister that local authorities and communities in and around Maun had named the institution Thamalakane Lifelong Learning Centre.
The institution, she said, which covered the North West region as well as the Central District from Rakops to Gweta and surrounding settlements, supported a population of 2 100 learners out of which 100 were part timers.
In a bid to ensure adherence to COVID-19 protocols, Ms Kesamang said the institution had appointed a task force to spearhead its preventative and safety measures.
She said working from home, had been institutionalised for some officers, a COVID-19 regulation team responsible for information dissemination on health, safety and coronavirus issues had been appointed.
Ms Kesamang said the use of registration forms, checking temperatures, wearing of masks and maintaining social distance in shared spaces among others were also in place.
The institution had also established a holding sick bay, closed its cafeteria temporarily and suspended tutorials, to strengthen compliance, she said.
Among the challenges experienced Ms Kesamang mentioned lack of digital gadgets for some learners and poor internet connectivity. ENDS
