Botswana Football Association (BFA) recently released a statement announcing the ending of the 2019/2020 BTC Premier League season which was left with 10 games.
The press statement dated 14 June 2020 says the decision came after considering the prevailing circumstances and the guidelines provided by the BFA medical team, FIFA and the financial resources needed to return to the field of play.
Tafic Sporting Club was consequently relegated to the First Division North (FDN) after accumulating 18 points in the just ended league.
The Francistown-based club was at position 14 in the premier league after playing 20 games.
On the other hand, Sua Flamingoes was promoted to the elite league after collecting 37 points from the First Division North League from 18 games played.
Speaking in an interview on Monday, Tafic’s chairperson, Carlos Sebina said the press release was not good for Tafic, and that they were going to see how to respond to the statement.
He said they would engage BFA officials and strive to reach an amicable solution regarding the association’s decision.
However, Sua Flamingos public relations officer, Lazarus Mafa expressed happiness towards the decision which automatically promoted them to the premier league.
He said they had been working hard for the past years to achieve promotion, and that it was a great achievement for the team and its supporters.
“We have managed to mobilise supporters from different places like Maun, Kasane, Selebi Phikwe and Sua, hence the achievement is for us all,” he said.
He said although they were concerned about when the league would either commence or end, they applauded the BFA’s decision to bring the league to an end.
“Our first priority is the health of everyone since we are also rallying behind government’s efforts against the pandemic,” he said.
He said if the BFA National Executive Committee could decide to reverse their decision, they would accept any other decision taken provided it was bona fide. Ends
