Shamukuni appreciates double shift system

15 Jun 2020

Chobe MP, Mr Machana Shamukuni, has advised Chobe Junior Secondary School pupils to observe COVID-19 protocols.

He said this during a tour of the school recently. Mr Shamukuni, also Assistant Minister of Tertiary Education, Research Science and Technology, welcomed introduction of a  double shift system meant to reduce the number of learners per class.

He explained that social distancing regulation resulted in additional classes, thus forcing some pupils to attend classes in the afternoon. School head, Mr Nelson Litiho, said the school was prepared to open for lower classes.

“We have made efforts to comply with COVID-19 protocols even though there are challenges at the gate which will be sorted out,” he added.

He said the school, with an enrollment of 1 077, had decided to split classes into two.

Therefore, each class would accommodate 16 pupils as a way of observing social distancing.

Mr Litiho said the school had requested 14 more teachers to add up to the more than 60 that the school had. He said the request had already been submitted to the ministry, adding that he expected a positive response because two teachers were going on transfers.

He said added advantage to fight COVID-19 in the school was that they had been allocated two safety health environment (SHE) officers as well as coronavirus scorpions.

The MPO also toured Leswaani Junior Secondary School in Kachikau where the school head Ms Doreen Setlhare briefed him on the preparedness of the school to welcome lower classes.

She explained that they did all that was necessary to fight COVID-19 including having a sick bay for suspected cases. ENDS
