Member of Parliament for Chobe, Mr Machana Shamukuni has applauded the Chobe District leadership for their coordinated response to COVID-19.

Handing over 76 blankets to the Ministry of Basic Education at Kasane Education Centre on Friday, Mr Shamukuni said had it not been the leadership’s work, the district could have registered cases of COVID-19 due to the district’s geographical location.

Chobe District is the only region in Botswana that has five entry points that places it at a high risk, particularly that it is an international tourist destination.

The assistant minister said the blankets should be distributed to established sick bays in schools to guard against any outbreak.

He appealed to teachers to educate pupils on COVID-19 protocols as a way of fighting the pandemic.

Mr Shamukuni also stated that the lifting of the lockdown was meant to open the economy.

In her welcome remarks, director of regional operations in Chobe District, Ms Lillian Matshameko said all the schools had complied with COVID-19 protocols. She also applauded the district leadership for working as a team in the fight against COVID-19.

“The disease has taught us to work as a team and we must continue to do that,” she added.

Giving a vote of thanks, the chairperson of Chobe District Council, Mr Amos Mabuku thanked the MP to have seen it fit to donate the blankets to support the district in the fight against COVID-19.

He said as the chairperson of the district, he was committed to the district’s motto of ‘Chobe first,’ and that the assistant minister’s donation would go a long way in the fight against the deadly pandemic. ENDS
