Tutume sub-council meeting adjourns indefinitely

14 Jun 2020

Tutume sub district council has adjourned indefinitely its scheduled council meeting following a directive from the Ministry of Local Government and Rural Development.

Briefing councillors on the directive calling for the sudden closure of the meeting, Tutume sub-district council deputy chairman, Mr Thatayaone Kehitile explained that it was disappointing that the communication came through social media not the formal way.

However, he said they had adhered to the communication by stopping the session.

He nonetheless said they were disappointed that the gazetted council meeting had to be stopped despite that they had made prior arrangements in compliance to COVID-19 protocols by convening at Tutume McConnel school hall which has adequate space.

Furthermore, he pointed out that they did not invite the public to attend the session as a preventative measure to contain the coronavirus.

He said there were issues they had to discuss such as the re-opening of schools and their readiness to comply with COVID-19 protocols.

Mr Kehitile added that almost all schools have their washing basins installed and toilets refurbished.

He however cited shortage of furniture in schools and expressed disappointment over budget cuts.

The meeting was informed that sanitizers had been distributed to schools despite challenges of lack of warm water for washing hands.

Furthermore, he said, they abruptly stopped the proceedings while they were still to discuss the COVID-19 food relief programme. Ends
