11 Jun 2020

Teachers have been commended for their hard work, commitment and dedication to duty in spite of the challenges associated with their profession.

Assistant Minister of Basic Education, Ms Nnaniki Makwinja showered accolades on teachers at the end of her visit to four primary schools in the Shoshong constituency on Tuesday.

Ms Makwinja said it was commendable that despite all the challenges they faced, teachers ensured that school operations were COVID-19 compliant..

The purpose of the tour,  which covered  Mosolotshane, Ikongwe, Kodibeleng and Setlhomo primary schools, was to assess the were COVID-19 response compliant for teaching and learning.

It was amazing, she said, that despite all the challenges teachers faced, they still ensured the ministry succeeded in its plan to reopen schools on June 2.

She assured teachers that even though the Ministry of Basic Education itself was currently facing unprecedented challenges due to the COVID-19 pandemic, their problems would be addressed.

Ms Makwinja said government recognised teachers’ mammoth task of moulding children, amid limited resources at their disposal.

“In that regard we recognise and appreciate you as positive agents of the country’s development agenda,” she said

She encouraged school heads and teachers to safeguard all renovations against vandalism to ensure schools remained conducive for learning.

“… I am pleased with what I have seen so far. As teachers, you sometimes find yourselves having to wear many hats due to the responsibilities that come with your profession and that, alone, we know is challenging,” she added.

Despite shortage of classrooms, all the four primary schools ensured there were sick bays in the schools, Ms Makwinja noted  adding that they also had infrared thermometers, visitors’ registers, sanitisers, washbasins and had constructed additional ablution blocks.

Among the dignitaries that accompanied the assistant minister were Shoshong MP, Mr Aubrey Lesaso, Mahalapye Sub-district assistant district commissioner, Mr Bakani Mathumo and Shoshong chief education officer, Ms Barulaganye Moseki. Ends
