China to eradicate extreme poverty

11 Jun 2020

The Chinese Embassy in Gaborone says China is set to eradicate extreme poverty this year and complete the building of a moderately prosperous society in all respects for its 1.4 billion population.

In a statement, the embassy says it is a solemn promise the Chinese government made to its people and an unprecedented achievement in the history of China and mankind as well.

To deal with the challenges and uncertainties brought by the COVID-19 pandemic, the Chinese government adopted a work report which listed a series of practical measures to develop the economy, stabilise employment, support business and ensure people’s well-being without setting a specific target for this year’s GDP growth for the first time so that all can focus on winning the battle against poverty and becoming a middle-income country.

The statement further says the Chinese government has stepped up modernisation of China’s system and capacity for governance. While further strengthening cooperation on COVID-19 response with the international community, China, with the vision of building a human community with a shared future, will stay committed to opening its door wider to the world, advance the Belt and Road Initiative, firmly safeguard the multilateral trading regime, advocate liberalisation and facilitation of trade and investment, and continue to boost economic and trade cooperation with other countries so as to promote stability in the world economy.
