President Masisi in virtual WEF meet
08 Jun 2020
President Dr Mokgweetsi Masisi will today participate in the inaugural World Economic Forum (WEF) 2030 Vision Leaders’ virtual meeting alongside 22 senior representatives of partner companies.
According to a press release from the Ministry of International Affairs and Cooperation, the platform will bring together global leaders from technology companies, governments, international organisations and civil society to explore ways and means of fostering an enabling environment to fast track 4IR technologies and innovations to accelerate implementation of SDGs.
Botswana is the only country participating in the forum following President Masisi’s engagement during the 50th WEF in Davos, Switzerland in January, says the release.
Through the engagement, President Masisi will among others explore country technology partnership for Botswana to support its efforts of using and developing technologies to realise the SDGs and contribute towards improved livelihoods and sustainable development.
“Botswana’s participation in this platform is a clear manifestation of her commitment to the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and readiness to stand in global solidarity in contributing towards a transformed and better world for all,” the release says.
It says 2030 vision platform was launched in Davos and seeks to promote the use of Fourth Industrial Revolution (4IR) technologies to advance the implementation of 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) outlined in the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
The release explains that SDGs address a range of global challenges including poverty, climate change, gender inequality as well as peace and security as it affirms the centrality of international cooperation and partnerships in the advancement of global goals. ENDS
