Jwaneng mine holds cycling race

Debswana Jwaneng Mine will on September 15 hold General Manager’s Cycle Race at Rugby Club aimed at encouraging Jwaneng community to become more active and participate in a form of exercise and cycle for a good cause.
The race is part of the mine’s Corporate Social Investment which helps align Debswana to Botswana’s economic development strategies including the vision 2016.
In an interview, Debswana Public and Corporate Affairs officer, Bontle Maruatona explained that funds generated during the event will go to supporting various charity causes in Jwaneng and the peripheral areas as well as to other groups in need of assistance.
She said the cycle race is a unique race that offers individuals of all ages; genders and varying cycling abilities to participate in a fun-filled family event that has the greater purpose of generating funds for those groups/communities that require financial aid. She stated that the race has over the years attracted professional cyclists from Gaborone Cycling club, Tsela Riders, Orapa Mine Cycling Club and other national level cycling clubs.
Maruatona said not only is it popular for locals but also managed to attract cyclist participation from Botswana’s neighboring countries which including Namibia and South Africa. She indicated that the elites will run the main race which is 100km while there are other shorter races being 35km, 10km and 2km. The champion of the main race will pocket P2000 with the first and second runner up getting P1000 and P500 respectively.
The race has been powered by the business community in Jwaneng to the tune of P400 000. ENDS
