Gumare in dire need of water
04 Jun 2020
Gumare village in the Okavango sub-district is experiencing severe water shortage, Water Utilities Corporation (WUC) head of business centre in Maun Mr Thabo Ndadi.
Speaking in a media briefing about WUC’s readiness post lockdown, Mr Ndadi said the village needed 1800 cubic litres per day to supply the village against the plant’s capacity of 150 cubic litres per day.
Efforts were being made to collaborate with other government departments to supply water through bowsing, he explained.
As a medium term solution, he said a tender had been awared to construct a new treatment plant which would take eight months to complete.
“The project is expected to be completed in January 2021 and we believe it will be a permanent solution to water challenges in Gumare and surrounding areas as it will produce 3000 cubic liters per day,” said Mr Ndadi.
Meanwhile, the corporation has another treatment plant at Wenela Ward in Maun, which used surface water from the Thamalakane River and could improve water supply.
However, WUC acting water works engineer, Mr Olebogeng Motseolapile revealed that the plant was not functional as its design life span had expired.
He said it was costly to refurbish it.
The plant supplied Sedie and Chobe residents who would now be supplied from the Borolong plant once it was fully functional. Ends
