Serowe District Health Management Team (DHMT) members have donated washing basins worth P12 000 to special education learners of Motetshwane Primary School in Serowe on Tuesday.

A DHMT official who handed the donation, Ms Catherine Garebatho, commended the team for making a difference, adding that the team was a blessing to the community of Motetshwane primary during hard times of COVID-19 pandemic.

Ms Garebatho said they donated to the school as a way of giving back to the community and showing compassion towards children with disability.

She noted that the staff of Sekgoma memorial hospital had been contributing from their pockets to assist students with disabilities.

Ms Garebatho said parents with special needs children required support and motivation, adding that the donation was one way of offering a helping hand to them so that they did not feel left out.

Receiving the donation, the school head, Mr Ontiretse Kenaope thanked Sekgoma staff for their continuous support, noting that it would bring changes in the lives of the children and their parents.

He said the donation would uplift the spirits of parents and motivate them not to lose hope in taking care of their disabled children.

He further said the donations would help them heal from the loneliness of lacking support in raising children with  disabilities.

Mr Kenaope said the staff aimed at changing mindsets to help people understand and appreciate that people living with disabilities could do great things.

He said the school had an enrollment of 634 learners, with 50 of them   living with disabilities as well as  23 teachers.

For his part Member of Parliament for Serowe North, Mr Baratiwa Mathoothe appreciated DHMT for assisting students with disabilities.

Mr Mathoothe said government alone could not succeed in improving the quality of life of people living with disabilities hence the need for collaborative efforts in the achievement of goals.

He said he was touched by the team’s act of benevolence and the spirit of compassion.

Educating people living with disabilities, he pointed out, was in line with government’s objectives of empowering all Batswana. ENDS
