29 May 2020
Machaba Safari has donated food hampers worth P20 000 to Okavango Kopano Mokoro Community Trust (OKMCT).
The community trust operates in the six poor settlements of Ditshiping, Boro, Xharaxao, Xuoxao, Daunara and Xaxaba.
It offers tourism products and services in a controlled hunting area in the famous Okavango Delta.
Speaking during the handing over ceremony on May 27, the company’s human resource manager, Mr Tuelo Montshonyane said the COVID-19 pandemic had affected all hence they deemed it fit to assist those in dire need to augment government efforts.
He noted that 95 per cent of their employees were from the six settlements affiliated to the trust.
He said since they were not making any money after the lockdown, they suspended their services and paid their staff half salaries.
Mr Machaba said they managed to retain all their staff, adding that they had benefitted from the COVID-19 wage subsidy.
Mr Montshonyane also noted that the company continued to support its staff with food hampers.
Bojanala area councillor, Mr Luke Motlaleselelo expressed gratitude towards Machaba Safari for their gesture.
He said all sectors of the economy were affected by the lockdown.
He appealed to other companies to extend a helping hand to members of the community.
He said all households in the six settlements benefited except two at Ditshiping.
The two, he said, had other means of survival.
OKMCT general manager, Mr Seikaneng Moepedi thanked Machaba Safari for coming to their rescue, noting that the mokoro business was negatively affected.
He said the donation would go along way in helping beneficiaries. ENDS
