Tertiary institutions to open in two phases
25 May 2020
Deputy permanent secretary in the Ministry of Tertiary Education, Research, Science and Technology, Mr Oupa Masesane has said institutions of learning would reopen in two phases, following closure due to the outbreak of COVID-19.
Addressing the media on May 25, Mr Masesane said the teaching and technical colleges as well as the Institutes of Health Sciences (IHS) would open this coming month while universities would open later as they had submitted their COVID response plans to the Botswana Qualifications Authority (BQA) for assessment.
Mr Masesane said colleges and IHS would open to enable the students to prepare for their attachments and teaching practices, which should run around June.
He said the institutions had submitted their COVID response plans to an established committee, which he said was chaired by the school principals and was made up of various stakeholders such as student union representatives.
Regarding the government sponsorship, Mr Masesane said the advertisement for students to apply had been halted for some time and would be announced after universities had issued notifications regarding their time of opening. Ends
