Pupils to return to refreshed ablution blocks

20 May 2020

Primary school pupils in the South East South Sub-district will use refreshed ablution blocks when schools re-open.

Primary school toilets have been an eyesore owing to lack of proper maintenance, vandalism and blockages of the drainage systems.

Senior assistant council secretary (SACS) in the sub-district council, Mr Montshwari Gabonthone, said in an interview recently that all toilets in the district will be in good condition when schools reopen.

Apart from having functional toilets, schools would have hand washing stands away from toilets to support frequent washing of hands by learners, he added.

“All of our schools will be ready for re-opening and school toilets will also have water tanks to care for water supply interruptions,” stated Mr Gabonthone.

He added that they had also decided on having an employee who will be responsible for the monitoring of toilets to curb vandalism.

“We know that pupils have been vandalizing our toilets and we believe the presence of that employee will be helpful,” he said.

Another intervention by the sub-council was
to cage some part of the toilet system, which attracted vandalism by pupils.

In addition, Mr Gabonthone said all the toilets basins and hand washing stands were procured from local manufactures.

Public schools are expected to reopen on June 2 with Standard 7 and their seniors in Form 3 and Form 5 being the first to reopen. Ends
