Facemasks not excuse to travel without permits

Masunga Police have cautioned residents to comply to regulations that require them to acquire permits before traveling.

Masunga police station Commander Superintendent Gaolatlhe Ngayaya said in an interview that they had observed movement of people without permits in some villages in the North East District ever since government ordered everyone to wear masks, thinking the masks requirement replaced the permits one.

She stated that as law enforcement officers, they expect every individual to produce a travel permit upon request in cognizance of the fact that lockdown was still in effect.

She also observed that some people travel with expired permits issued online the previous day of travel and still proceed with their travel plans without seeking a valid permit.

The station commander implored every individual to ensure their permit was valid before travelling so that they do not find themselves on the wrong side of the law.

Supt Ngayaya explained that permits were valid until May 22 when free movement within zones will be effected and called on all leaders to continue raising awareness on such issues. She encouraged people to desist from unnecessary travel even after May 22.

She further highlighted that there was confusion surrounding the issuance of the pink permit for returning to work with some employees approaching Dikgosi and head-teachers to issue such rather than contacting their respective employers.

She said veterinary gates should continue to operate as during lockdown with cross zonal permits required to monitor movements. ENDS
