Regional director-operations, in the Ministry of Basic Education is upbeat that come June 2, all public schools within the North East region will re-open.
After closing schools on March 20, government had as part of the third phase to ease extreme social distancing, decided to re-open schools, both public and private.
Whereas public schools were set to re-open on June 2, private schools according to Mr Labane Mokgosi were given green light to open on May 15, provided they satisfied COVID-19 guidelines set by the Ministry of Health and Wellness.
“We have already inspected three private schools in Francistown namely; John Mackenzie, Mophato and Jacaranda and I am happy to confirm that the trio has satisfied all set requirements and are at liberty to open anytime,” he said.
According to Mr Mokgosi, issues of teacher/students ratio, functionality of things such as ablution facilities, availability of reliable water gave private schools an upper hand over public schools.
The region had as a result been forced to put in a lot of work to ensure public schools complied with the guidelines aimed at fighting the spread of COVID-19.
He said for instance that stuffed classes at both primary and secondary schools especially within the city of Francistown called for the maintenance of already existing facilities while some cases placed a demand for the erection of completely new ones.
“In some public schools such as Batanani in Mapoka, Shanganani in Tsamaya we were forced to put up proper drainage systems,” he said.
Mr Mokgosi relayed also that given the populous nature of the majority of the schools especially those within the city of Francistown, the double shift model of running the school was more likely to be adopted. Ends
