Government bans importation of live pigs
15 May 2020
In the wake of an outbreak of African Swine Fever (ASF) in Namibia and South Africa, the Department of Veterinary Services informs farmers and the general public of a ban on importation of live pigs and their fresh products from the affected countries.
A press release from the Ministry of Agricultural Development and Food Security says the ban is with immediate effect as ASF is a highly contagious disease of domestic and wild pigs.
“As a result of the reported outbreak of African Swine Fever, farmers are advised to confine their pigs in pigsties and report all sick or dead pigs (both domestic, free range and warthogs) to their local Department of Veterinary Services offices or the Police,” says the press release.
“The public will be updated on new developments regarding the situation,” adds the press release. ENDS
