Shamukuni donates food hampers

 Member of Parliament for Chobe, Mr Machana Shamukuni has donated 10 tonnes of food hampers to be distributed among Chobe residents who are affected by the effects of COVID-19.

Chobe District Council secretary, Mr Esau Mbenga said this during District Disaster Management Committee meeting on May 14.

He said the food items include mealie meal, sorghum, rice and sugar.

Mr Mbenga thanked Mr Shamukuni for his unwavering support during the trying times of the deadly coronavirus outbreak.

This is the second donation by Mr Shamukuni, who is also the Assistant Minister of Tertiary Education, Research Science and Technology following another donation of 50 bags of cement and food hampers worth P1 000 to a

10-member family of Satau whose four mud houses were gutted by fire early last month.

Mr Mbenga also stated that Chobe District Council was still awaiting an instruction from the parent ministry to go ahead with the second round of the COVID-19 food basket distribution.

He explained that initially, Chobe District Council was allocated around P600 000 for the first round but due to the fact that food were expensive in their area, they had gone over a million Pula in the first round.

Chobe District Council chief community development officer, Mr Ogoditsemang Semele said the district was ready for the second round because they had now engaged local retailers and tuckshops to source food items.

Mr Semele thanked the cordial relationship between government departments (both central and local) in the district for the support during distribution of food baskets.  Ends
