North West District Council (NWDC) secretary Mr Motlogelwa Thuso says the P45 000 worth of donation by Mr Veg came in handy as COVID-19 affected many households in the district.
Speaking at a donation by Mr Veg on May 11, Mr Thuso said 33 647 people had been assessed in the whole of North West District to date and that assessment was still on-going.
He noted that 22 222 people had been recommended for assistance while 16 223, which is 73 per cent of the recommend population, had been assisted with food baskets.
Mr Thuso said the fruits and vegetable donation would be distributed to deserving households in the Maun Administration Authority and the Okavango Sub-district.
Mr Thuso further said the North West District had about 4 723 destitute persons, 246 home-based care clients, 575 children in need of care and 2 255 orphans who relied on government assistance.
North West District commissioner Mr Keolopile Leipego appreciated Mr Veg for its donation towards COVID-19 relief.
He noted that the North West District had a lot of people in the low income bracket, therefore a large population of the district was seriously affected by the lockdown.
He therefore said all donations aimed to assist the community were welcome.
Mr Veg store manager, Ms Gaone Kebalepile said the donation encompassed 1 500 fruit and vegetable hampers to be distributed to the vulnerable households in the remaining period of the lockdown.
Ms Kebalepile said Mr Veg would also assist with transportation of the goods to the households.
The donation includes potatoes, onions, carrots, beetroots, tomatoes, butternut, green pepper, oranges and apples. ENDS
