Sub-district council improves sanitary hygiene in schools

Okavango sub-district council is working around the clock to ensure adequate provision of toilet facilities to improve sanitary hygiene in primary school to prevent the spread of COVID-19 pandemic when schools re-open.


The sub-district’s Senior Assistant Council Secretary (SACS), Mr Masaoko Katora said construction of ablution blocks at schools such as Etsha 1 and Shamombo in Etsha 7 had started after closing due to lockdown.

He said blocks of toilets were also being constructed in Etsha 13 and Mokgacha Primary Schools, and the expected completion date for the toilets is May 22.
 
Mr Katora also noted that maintenance of primary school toilets was underway in Seronga, Gunotsoga, Beetsha, Gani, Gudigwa, Kauxwi, Ngarange and Sekondomboro among others.

He said the district’s maintenance crew was re-deployed to site on April 30, following re- allocation of transportation, adding that the work was anticipated to be complete soon.

To ensure continuous water flow at primary schools’ sanitary facilities, the Mr Katora said booster pumps were going to be installed in 16 schools where water supply was a challenge.

He said quotation for the booster pumps was sourced on April 17, while request for direct procurement from the adjudication committee was done on April 22 and the contractor was engaged on May 5.

Additionally, Mr Katora noted that the district was committed to ensuring adequate hand washing points at strategic areas.

He said 26 hand washbasins had been installed at Gumare, Kauxwi, Mohembo, Nxaunxau, Nokaneng, Habu, Sepopa, Xhaoga, Ngarange, Ikoga and Sekondomboro primary schools.

Also, he noted 45 tank bases had been completed in various primary schools in the Okavango sub-district. ENDS
