03 May 2020

Chobe Member of Parliament, Mr Machana Shamukuni has donated 50 bags of cement and food hampers worth P1 000 to Ntema family, who were recently left homeless due to a fire that gutted their houses in Satau.

Mr Shamukuni, also Assistant Minister of Tertiary Education, Research Science and Technology, accompanied by Chobe District Council chairperson, Mr Amos Mabuku, district commissioner, Ms Sekgabo Makgosa and some members of the business community visited the family on May 2.

The area MP said he was touched by the disaster that befell the family more so that their four mud houses were gutted by fire leaving them empty handed.

He said the disaster came at a time when government on the other hand, was fighting COVID-19, which was digging deeply on government coffers

The assistant minister said the construction of the house for the family, would be a community project in which members of the community would be mobilised immediately after the extreme social distancing period.

He appealed to all to extend a helping hand to the family to restore its dignity.

Ms Makgosa said all donations to the family would be coordinated by Kasane Red Cross office, which would then submit a report to office of the district commissioner.

Meanwhile, Cresta Mowana Safaris Resort also donated food hampers, four mattresses, four chairs, fitted sheets, gowns and six blankets.

Cresta Mowana Safaris Resort general manager, Mr Bernard Magano commended Batswana for their compassion towards the less fortunate in life.

He said the spirit of compassion and empathy resonates well with love, care and attention Batswana had for others

He said staff and management of Cresta Mowana bought food hampers worth P1 000.

He said the little that Cresta Mowana donated would augment what other individuals and companies had already donated to help restore the family’s living conditions.

Accepting the donations, one of the family members, Ms Rumbe Ntema thanked Mr Shamukuni for the generosity and others who donated earlier, saying with the donations, her family’s dignity would be restored.

Mr Shamukuni is the second individual to donate to the family following the donation by Kasane businessman, Mr Ashok Kumar who donated bags of cement for the construction of the house as well as food hampers and blankets.

Other companies that have so far donated include Bakwena Lodge, Kasane Red Cross society and Chobe District Council. Ends
