Jwaneng to complete food distribution

25 Apr 2020

Jwaneng Town Council’s chief social and community development officer, Ms Letang Mbaakanyi, says the process to distribute COVID-19 relief food basket is expected to continue until Monday.

The council started distributing food items to eligible households on Friday afternoon after assessments.

“We managed to assess 1 913 households and 665 were found eligible. Looking at the number of the households, we expect the distribution to last throughout the weekend. We have engaged 10 private transporters to help in distributing the packages,” she said.

She said they had established a pool of private truck owners that they wouldl rotate monthly as a way of empowerment.

Ms Mbaakanyi said the food items were mostly from the Office of the President (OP) while the farm produce was procured from farmers in the town’s surroundings.

She said they were confident the packages would last beneficiaries until the next month, but said that the programme was still open for review should a need to increase the package arise.

Ms Mbaakanyi said some of the challenges they encountered during assessments were people who wanted to be assisted with paying rentals as they indicated that they could not afford to pay.

She however said that they could not assist as rental relief was not covered under COVID-19 relief. BOPA
