North East District has registered 13 826 households for the COVID-19 food basket relief.

North East District Council secretary, Mr Motshwariemang Matseka, stated that 42 villages had been assessed with only Matsiloje remaining.

He stated that assessment in Matsiloje would be completed by Friday this week and distribution of food baskets would commence in some villages same day.

He said food items would be purchased from shop outlets within each village as a way to empower businesses in the locality. He explained that the council did pricing evaluations on every shop to curb hiking of prices for this exercise.

Mr Matseka said for remote villages where there were no shops, they would make exceptions and purchase food from the nearest village.

Furthermore, he said  the council had registered individuals with vans and trucks to help in transporting food baskets. He said the district had engaged 17 temporary social workers for the exercise for a period of two months. ends
