22 Apr 2020
Selebi Phikwe Town Council (SPTC) has completed household assessments and has already started the process of distributing food hampers to deserving families in response to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Speaking in an interview, chief social and community development officer, Ms Baledzi Makubate, said 3 230 households were assessed at Botshabelo of which 161 were already benefiting from the council food basket programme.
Another 1821 households would be assisted to cushion families with food basket during this period of extreme social distancing.
Ms Makubate said some unscrupulous members of the community took advantage of this by leaving their households to rent houses in Botshabelo so that they get an opportunity to benefit from the food basket.
She said such people complained that their households had been skipped during the assessments yet the social and community development officers did not skip any household.
Ms Makubate further said investigations would be done to ensure that undeserving members of the community did not benefit from the programme.
She further stated that 2 960 households were assessed at Kagiso ward of which 1 792 benefitted from the COVID-19 food basket programme.
At Ikageleng ward, she said a total of 2464 households and 1 886 benefited.
Ms Makubate said the council intended to complete giving out food baskets by Friday, adding that SPTC managed to buy food directly from local supermarkets during the holidays.
Meanwhile, the council received a donation of 892 bags of 10kg sorghum meal from the Office of the President (OP) on Tuesday. Ends
