Standpipes Vandalism frustrates WUC efforts

21 Apr 2020

Water Utilities Corporation (WUC) Head of Business Centre in Maun, Mr Thabo Ndadi has decried vandalism of public standpipes in some areas such as Sehithwa village.

He said the vandalism was worrisome and it frustrated the corporation’s efforts to ensure the community had access to potable water.

Updating media practitioners on the water situation in the district, he underscored the need for members of the community to appreciate the importance of water, adding that currently the world was going through a tough time to control and contain the COVID-19 pandemic.

He appealed to the public to join hands with the corporation and safeguard the water infrastructure and also use water wisely, urging them to report any leakages and vandalism so that the corporation could act accordingly.

Mr Ndadi revealed that some areas in the district were still experiencing water shortage as the available water sources supplied only 70 per cent of potable water. The district, he said needed 24 485 cubic meter of water on a daily basis.

He also noted that efforts were underway to connect prepaid water pipes in some areas as the plan was to ensure the community had access to water to protect themselves.

With regards to the re-connection of all the standpipes, Mr Ndadi pointed out that the exercise was going smoothly as they had reconnected 3287 households and this being done whether customers had paid their outstanding water bills or not.

The exercise was in response to the Corona-virus message of personal hygiene as the first line measure of prevention.

Mr Ndadi noted that they experienced challenges as some households had been disconnected since 2004 but stated that the corporation was working round the clock to ensure all residents have access to water. ENDS
