Parliament adjourns

A special sitting of Parliament has adjourned until tomorrow at 9am. It adjourned when Nkange MP, Dr Never Tshabang was still on the floor.

President Dr Mokgweetsi Masisi called the meeting today to ask MPs to approve his request for a six months state of public emergency in order to fight the COVID-19 pandemic.

Leader of Opposition, Mr Dumelang Saleshando, earlier on submitted that Umbrella for Democratic Change did not agree with President Masisi's request, but rather suggested that the state of emergency period be put at 28 days. However, Parliament rejected his proposal to amend six months period to 28 days

Botswana Democratic Party MPs who have already contributed to the debate supported President Masisi's six-months request while those from opposition rejected the request. ends
