Superintendent Lebalang Maniki of Central Police Station in Francistown this morning issued warning that the police will arrest anyone found to be violating the Emergency Powers Act.

Supt Maniki said in an interview that the police were worried by people who continued to roam the streets of Francistown.

The police chief stated that the same applied to people who had since the start of the 28-day extreme social distancing protocols, gathered at the district commissioner’s office asking for permits to travel to various places.

“People should desist from gathering at the district commissioner’s office. Not only are they breaking the law, they are also exposing themselves and others to the risk of contracting the coronavirus,” he said.

He thus pleaded with Batswana to bear with government under the circumstances and comply with COVID-19 regulations.

If found guilty, one could be liable to an imprisonment term not exceeding six months or a fine not exceeding P5 000 or both.

Meanwhile, two people were arrested for selling alcohol illegally while four others, two Batswana and two Zimbabweans, were nabbed for harvesting phane during the extreme social distancing period. ENDS
