Two people suspected to be from Germany are reported to be stranded in Maun following a travel ban on foreign nationals from high risk countries as a measure to manage COVID-19 pandemic. 

Ngamiland District commissioner (DC), Mr Keolopile Leipego, confirmed that the duo, who were suspected to be from Germany, visited the Okavango Delta and were currently staying at one of the lodges in Maun.

He said they came before March 25 and got stranded when most countries closed borders before they could return to their country but efforts were ongoing to assist them.

Mr Leipego revealed that they engaged Department of Immigration and Citizenship to follow-up the issue and see how best they could engage the relevant embassy to facilitate their return.

The duo, he said, were eager to go back to their country as they had been inquiring on how the country could assist them.

Before the travel ban, it was reported that safari companies and international agents requested their clients in Botswana to cut their stay and go back to their respective countries but some were cooperative while some were reluctant because they had already paid in advance

The duo got stranded following South Africa’s statement last month to impose a travel ban from March 18 to protect its people and reduce the impact of the virus on its economy and also canceled visas to visitors from such high risk countries and previously granted visas were revoked.

It was reported that most of the international tourists traversing to Botswana connected from South Africa to reach the prestigious Okavango Delta. Ends
