Villagers heed President's call
04 Apr 2020
Residents of some villages in Southern District have heeded President Dr Mokgweetsi Masisi’s message on state of emergency and extreme social distancing.
BOPA's snap survey on April 3 showed that in most parts of the district such as Moshupa, Kanye, Moshana and Selokolela, many Batswana were compliant since streets were empty.
Only security personnel were visible on streets and quietness was order of the day.
A resident of Selokolela Ms Khumo Wamaselo said the declaration of state of emergency mandated them to heed the President's call.
She said throughout the day there was trivial movement in the village because some resident who did not have stand pipes in their homes were forced to fetch water at public stand pipes points but did not breach set-out health precautions as the number was not worrisome and people were exercising social distancing.
Ms Wamaselo said she could not cope up with long queues in Kanye a day prior to state of emergency's commencement as she wanted to buy enough groceries that would sustain the family for the stipulated period.
She said though people would be permitted to go to supermarkets for a limited time, she was of the view that it might soil the intended purpose, hence urging fellow citizens to buy at nearby tuck-shops rather than go to supermarkets to beat any possible spread of COVID 19.
She said she was not used to the situation of staying indoors, but remained optimistic that as days passby, she might acclimatize. ends
