Maun police yesterday faced a challenge of some motorists who were not complying with state of public emergency and extreme social distancing regulations. Several drivers took to the road without COVID-19 travel permits.
In an interview, Sub Inspector Modise Mutumba, said most motorists explained that they were going to buy items at supermarkets.
He said they referred such people to the police station for further interrogation to determine whether they could be charged or not. Sub Inspector Mutumba said people could have sought travel permits from the district commissioner’s office instead of breaking the law.
Nonetheless, he said, police officers were lenient on people who were visiting admitted family members at the hospital.
Sub Inspector Mutumba said a group of people were found drinking at in Boseja ward and were likely to be charged since they were non-compliant to social distancing regulation, adding that the depot owner would also face charges for selling liquor when sale had been suspended.Ends
