Government to continue social safety programmes

 Government will continue providing human relief programme assistance.

Speaking at a press briefing to update the nation on government initiatives intended to cusion the nation from coronavirus effects, Minister of Local Government and Rural Development Mr Eric Molale said assistance would  continue to be provided to beneficiary groups.

Such groups include; old age pensioners, persons with disabilities, community home-based care volunteers, Ipelegeng workers, destitute persons and orphans as well as children aged 0-5, who receive supplementary feeding.

Regarding Ipelegeng, Mr Molale said the programme would be suspended during the state of emergency, but employees would be paid their wages during the suspension period. Furthermore, he said cluster police volunteers, special constables and green scopions would continue working during the state of emergency period.

Mr Molale said government would also monitor the situation among families who might need assistance with food, sanitary and health necessities. He said monitoring would be done through social workers among communities, adding that government would also engage temporary social workers as well as non-governmental organisations to assist in monitoring and identifying families in distress.

 

He also noted that government would assist the homeless with finding approrpiate accomodation during the extreme social distancing period. ENDS
