Hunting season opens April

The Department of Wildlife and National Parks has released a citizen only hunting quota for this year.

It is scheduled to begin the first Tuesday of April ending the third week of September. 

Francistown-based wildlife regional officer, Mr Mpho Nthomiwa, said in an interview that citizen only hunting season quota for this year would be for the Central District area of CT16/18, which covered areas from Serule to Maitengwe and some parts of Nata/Gweta. 

 He further noted that those allowed to hunt would be selected out of a total of 1 913 people who had applied for hunting indicating the use of raffle method.

 Mr Nthomiwa said the winners would be expected to acquire a single game license. Licenses ranged from P8 000 for an elephant to P50 for a baboon. 

He said in this year’s quota, there were 22 Impalas, 10 elephants, 10 Ostriches, five Steenbok, five Duikers and five Baboons as well as four Kudus. 

The Impala license, Steenbok and Duiker is P100 while the Ostrich license is P300. 

In addition, he said hunters would be expected to also acquire Control Hunting Area permit which was charged at P20 per week. 

For an elephant, he noted that in addition to the license and permit, the hunter should be accompanied by a professional hunter as well as escorting wildlife officer. ends
