Beneficiary eager to sail through amidst challenges

23 Mar 2020

Botswana has adopted the 2030 agenda to eradicate poverty and achieve sustainable development.

To fulfill the agenda, the country came up with robust programmes such as the Poverty Eradication Programme in order to address social and economic ills associated with poverty.

Under the programme, government came up with packages, among them, fashion design, beekeeping, catering, baking and poultry.

Ms Matlhobole Mosothwane of Mochudi, who lives with disability, was given a poultry package in October 2016 to uplift her life.

She started with 50 layers and was currently selling to individuals and supplying one of the primary schools in Mochudi.

She said Choppies group had also offered her a shelf space at one of their Mochudi branches.

She said one of the challenges she faced was poor access to markets resulting in cash-flow and production management challenges.

Ms Mosothwane also grappled with inefficiency in disease management.

In an effort to overcome the market challenges, Ms Mosothwane said she approached some organisations for help. In 2019, she was adopted by Kgatleng Poultry Association that helped her with distribution.

She said language barrier was still a challenge since many people were not familiar with sign language.

Ms Mosothwane said training and information sharing was important for farmers. ends
