The Health and Awareness committee member at Good Hope Sub-district Ms Irene Mahalelo advised the youth to develop the habit of exercising to prevent mental health instabilities as a prevention measure.
She said this during fitness and wellness day that was incorporated with HIV/AIDS testing and screening of other diseases in Phitshane Molopo recently.
She said lack of exercise was the main bearer of health challenges such as high blood pressure and depression, among others.
Ms Mahalelo said health authorities encouraged people to consume one litre of water per every 30kg of their body weight daily.
She told the youth that drinking two glasses of warm water every morning cleansed the body system.
Senior programmes officer in the Department of Youth Empowerment Sport and Culture Development at Good Hope, Ms Phemelo Masilo said that the event was strategically organised to raise awareness on HIV/AIDS as this was the Month of Youth Against AIDS.
She said the interactive platform would also enable the youth to know their status.
“It is important for the youth to know their status in order to stop the spread of the illness,” she said.
Ms Masilo attributed the spread of HIV among the youth to lack of employment, as they engage in ill activities.
She also noted domestic violence as another factor that led the spread of the disease.
In his remarks, the area councillor, Mr Boitumelo Lonkokile told the community that body exercise was not only good for physical health, but also critical for mental health.
He appreciated the work that was done by the Ministry of Youth, Sport and Culture Development and encouraged them to continue to sensitise the youth about HIV/AIDS. Ends
