Abandoned govt buildings worry assistant minister

05 Mar 2020

Government is worried about abandonment of government buildings countrywide, said Assistant Minister of Local Government and Rural Development, Mr Kgotla Autlwetse in Parliament on Wednesday,

Mr Autlwetse said his ministry, in collaboration with the Ministry of Infrastructure and Housing Development, would conduct a holistic assessment of abandoned buildings to determine their structural stability and usability.

The Public Asset Management Policy, he said, would be implemented to ensure effective management and efficient use of public assets including identification and recording of physical assets and their valuation, maintenance and disposal.

The assistant minister said he was aware of unused structures in Ghanzi South, adding they belonged to various government ministries.

The Ghanzi South legislator, Mr Motsamai Motsamai had asked the minister if he would consider demolishing all uninhabitable and unused structures in settlements in Ghanzi South constituency as they now serve as havens for criminal syndicates. ENDS
