Clean city campaign launches

02 Mar 2020

Gaborone City Council on Friday launched the Clean City campaign to be held annually.

Members of the public who managed a litter bag full of waste, were rewarded with P30 each.

Speaking at the launch, Gaborone city mayor, Mr Father Maphongo said Gaborone was a diamond city, hence it  should sparkle.

“It is our belief and wish that the people of Gaborone will lend their support to this campaign by cleaning the spaces owned by Gaborone City Council, the environment where they stay and their homes,” he said.

He said a clean environment attracted investors from other countries to grow the country’s economy.

Mr Maphongo said recycling litter could create jobs for Batswana and pleaded with the community to spread the message on the campaign since it was everyone’s responsibility to clean their sorroundings.

“Our mandate going forward is that from the clean city concept, there will be a project to plant trees in the city,” stated Mr Maphongo.

Lusaka City Council deputy mayor, Mr Christopher Shakafuswa encouraged Batswana to support the city council in keeping the environment and the city clean.

He said Zambia recently launched a clean up campaign dubbed Make Zambia Clean, green and healthy and he was glad and honoured to be attending the Gaborone launch. ENDS
