Diamond Trading Company Botswana (DTCB) and Malebogo Max Foundation have joined forces to fund the annual Malebogo Max Foundation Wheelchair Basketball tournament billed for March 14 at the Gaborone Sports Hub.
Speaking at the official launch of the sponsorship in Gaborone on Friday, DTCB managing director Sedireng Serumola said they injected P463 000, some of which went towards purchasing 20 specialised sporting wheelchairs.
Serumola said DTCB took pride in ensuring that the initiatives it promoted were those that had a wide impact on communities, adding that the foundation represented that.
“In 2019, Malebogo Max Foundation and DTCB collaborated in an inclusion and diversity programme that was organised for DTCB staff. A relation was thus developed between DTCB and the foundation,” he said.
Serumola expressed appreciation to the foundation and its volunteers for their hard work and encouraged them to soldier on, no matter the challenges.
For her part the foundation founder, Malebogo Molefhe said it aimed to raise the development potential of marginalised women in rural areas and unprivileged girls. The foundation also seeks to eradicate gender based violence.
Initially the tournament took place just before the commemoration of the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based violence, but the dates have been moved to the beginning of the year.
Molefhe appreciated the sponsorship and noted that the support would create opportunities for wheelchair basketball development in Botswana. ENDs
