01 Mar 2020
President Dr Mokgweetsi Masisi and his Zimbabwean counterpart, Dr Emmerson Mnangagwa have hailed as successful cordial and strong bilateral relations that continue to exist between the two countries.
A joint communiqué by the two leaders, that also marked the end of the second session of the Bi-National Commission (BNC) between Botswana and Zimbabwe held from February 25-28, holds in high esteem the development.
Reading out a joint statement at Maun Lodge last Friday, Minister of International Affairs and Cooperation, Dr Unity Dow relayed that both heads of state underscored the fact that BNC remained an important bilateral instrument that gave direction to the growing relations between Botswana and Zimbabwe.
She told the meeting that other than reviewing the state of bilateral cooperation of the two nations, the duo also exchanged views on a broad spectrum of regional, continental and international issues of mutual interest and concern.
The two, Dr Dow said, for instance renewed their commitment towards speedy conclusion of regional projects of great significance such as the Ponta Techobanine haul railway line, a vital trade corridor expected to contribute towards greater regional integration.
The project, which covers construction of a rail line extending across Botswana, Zimbabwe and Mozambique covering a long stretch of about 1 700 kilometres, is envisaged to greatly facilitate both regional and international trade.
The three partnering states, namely Botswana, Zimbabwe and Mozambique are expected to contribute funds towards its construction.
Commendations, she stated, also flew thick and fast as the two statesmen congratulated the people of the Comoros, Madagascar, Mauritius, Namibia and South Africa for holding successful and peaceful elections.
Also, Dr Dow said the two noted political developments in Malawi following the decision of the Constitutional Court of that respective country to annul the 2019 Presidential elections and call for fresh polls.
Also, Dr Dow said the two Presidents expressed their countries’ commitment to African unity and integration, particularly through the implementation of the African Union Agenda 2063 and its Action Plan.
“In particular, they welcomed the African Continental Free Trade Area agreement, which will deepen trade relations within the continent,” she said. ENDS
