Oversight institutions independent

27 Feb 2020

Assistant Minister for Presidential Affairs, Governance and Public Administration says oversight institutions are independent.

Mr Dumizweni Mthimkhulu told Parliament on February 26 that the independence of Directorate of Corruption and Economic Crime (DCEC), Ombudsman, Directorate of Public Prosecutions (DPS), Financial Intelligence Agency (FIA) and the Directorate of Intelligence and Security Services (DISS) was confirmed by the respective statutes that established them.

He was responding to a question from Mahalapye East Member of Parliament, Mr Yandani Boko who wanted to know how and when oversight institutions would be removed from Office of the President.

Mr Mthimkhulu stated that DPP and FIA did not fall under Office of the President but under the Ministries of Defence, Justice and Security and Finance and Development Planning respectively.

He said the placing of oversight institutions under different ministries was done for administrative and budgetary purposes.

For that reason, Mr Mthimkhulu said currently government had no plan of relocating oversight institutions from the current host ministries.  Ends
