Boy Scouts celebrate movement founder

26 Feb 2020

Ghanzi region former programme scout movement coordinator, Mr Modise Madumane says the founder of scout movement Robert Baden-Powell deserves to be honoured and celebrated owing to the positive contribution of scouting in the community.

In observation of February 22, a day that marked Baden-Powell’s 163 years birthday, Mr Madumane said it was pertinent to honour Baden-Powell citing that over the years, scouting had been committed to the moulding of a better world by raising boys and girls to be responsible citizens and agents of development.

He said scouting promoted discipline and handwork, which could be used as a tool towards academic excellence.

Mr Madumane, who is now a nominated councillor explained that in Botswana, scouting started during the then Bechuanaland Protectorate era in 1936, adding that celebrating the founder of scouting was also celebration of the country’s history. For his part, coordinator of Itekeng junior school scouting club, Mr Gaolatheope Baiphethi said if scout members could truly obey the rules of scouting and seek God’s intervention, Botswana would have a  better future. He challenged scout members to be exemplary, and shun drug and alcohol abuse.
