Slow project implementation worries MAA councillors

26 Feb 2020

Maun Administration Authority (MAA) councillors have aired concerns about slow implementation of Community Constituency Projects (CCP).

The councillors made the comments following MAA council chairperson’s remarks at the  sub-council meeting on Tuesday.

The chairperson, Mr Vapaune Moreti had informed the councillors that only four sub-district CCPs had been completed out of the 39 planned for the current financial year.

Mr Moreti said that all projects planned for the financial year were 109, which included 39 CCPs, 23 destitute houses and seven maintenance works.

Commenting on the chairperson’s remarks, cllr for Phuduhudu Mr Geoffrey Sekuni said delay in completion of CCPs was disturbing.

Mr Sekuni also said the council should employ people with the relevant skills and who would complete the projects on time.

He said it was discouraging that contractors for borehole projects had abandoned the projects, citing lack of expertise.

Councillor for Komana, Mr Zahorerua Maoveka said failure to complete the allocated projects in the current financial year was a concern, therefore suggested that the Council should introspect and find out where it failed.

Bojanala Councillor, Mr Luke Motlaleselelo reiterated that it was worrisome that only a few projects were completed in the current financial year yet the council had new projects planned for the 2020/2021 financial year.

Mr Motlaleselelo said the council should therefore put forward ways of how it would deal with the project backlog.

He also said the adjudication committee needed to be audited to find out if there was no malpractice regarding many court cases arising from queries associated with the tendering processes.

On other matters, the councillors appreciated the establishment of a primary school at Sexaxa, which would have standard one and two classes.

The chairperson said the Sexaxa satellite school had opened in January with an enrollment of 53 standard one and two pupils housed at Matlapana Primary School pending official opening of  Sexaxa school.

Mr Baikgodisi said that the move would help Matlapana Primary School, which was overpopulated since it had a large catchment area of Matlapana, Sexaxa, Boro and Senonnori.

Specially elected councillor, Ms Motlagomang Mauchaza also welcomed the development of a primary school at Sexaxa. ENDs
