Sport codes free to approach private sector

26 Feb 2020

Assistant Minister of Youth Empowerment, Sport and Culture Development, Mr Buti Billy says all sporting codes are at liberty to approach the private sector for sponsorship to augment provision from government.

Mr Billy said sponsorship for sport was not adequate hence efforts were being made to encourage all sporting codes to be professional in their approach and in managing their affairs, which would make them attractive to potential sponsors besides government.

He said most sporting codes were run by volunteers hence they needed to be capacitated to source and manage sponsorship.

He added that reliance on government funding could also be reduced when sport codes modelled themselves into commercially oriented entities and developed models of partnerships with investors so as to help them generate more revenue.

Thus, he encouraged more private sector players to come on board to invest in sport in terms of sponsorship and partnerships.

The assistant minister was responding to a question from MP for Mochudi East, Mr Mabuse Pule who had asked him to clarify when the ministry would liberalise sport codes to stop depending on government for sponsorship. Ends
