Maun Sports Volunteer Movement (SVM) aims to engage Mascom so as to participate in this year’s Mascom Derby billed for Maun on Easter Friday.

The leading mobile telecommunications company brings excitement to the tourism town of Maun every Easter Holidays by hosting a horse race.

Maun SVM chairperson, Ralph Ledimo said this during an elective meeting for the region on Sunday. He said they would hold talks with Mascom to discuss how they could partner.

Ledimo, who retained his seat as the chairperson, noted that the popular race brought new and exciting avenues of entertainment to Maun and surrounding villages. The movement, he said, comprised of different professionals who could offer different services for the success of the race.

He said they wanted to take part in every sporting activity taking place in the district, adding that “we want to spread our wings, but are limited by funds. If funds permit we want to be visible in every sport code,” he stressed.

He was hopeful that their negotiations with Mascom would bear positive results. He noted that SVM encouraged individuals and the community to participate in sports, adding that they also seek to recognise and appreciate those involved.

Sports volunteer movements were formed to compliment efforts by Botswana National Sports Commission to achieve the objectives of Vision 2012 and 2016 by fostering the spirit of volunteerism in different codes.

Ledimo appealed to the SVM national executive committee to assist with banners and T-shirts for easy identification.

He informed the meeting that the region had performed well in the last quarter, noting that they participated in major events such as the Botswana Games, constituency tournaments and Botswana Athletics Association competitions for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics and other major competitions.

He said members worked tirelessly because they took volunteerism seriously, and wished sponsors could come on board to support their efforts.

“We had a busy quarter and I appreciate the team spirit and commitment demonstrated by our members to ensure the success of the events. You represented the region well even in national activities in Gaborone,” he added.

SVM national vice-president, Typson Patane commended the Maun region for a job well done and encouraged them to continue working hard. Maun region, he said, had upheld the mission and vision of the movement Other committee members elected were public relations officer, Tebogo Mogaetsho, Floyd Dibapile, vice chairperson while Boikanyo Moepedi was elected secretary general.
